There are certain products that we keep for so long until we overlook the fact that they have overstayed. Most of these are products that are past their sell-by date.
Some like nutty spread, flavors, nuts, soups and tinned foods may have an excellent shelf-life but the truth is that they cannot keep going forever. Here are 15 such foods which may eventually turn to become deadly.
1. Baking Powder
Your baking powder can stay for as long two years but after long periods of opening, it no longer makes your cakes ascend the proper way.
Continued exposure of baking powder to the environment causes it to hold moisture making it less effective. Your baking powder must always be kept in a tightly closed container in a cool and dry place to preserve its freshness.
You can test if your powder is still effective by filling a container with bubbling water then add a teaspoon of the baking powder. The more the bubbles formed the better and fresher the heating powder.
2. Whole Wheat Flour
Whole grain wheat flour is not like the standard white flour that can go for almost 9 months. This type of flour can turn sour extremely fast.
Flour is best preserved in a hermetically sealed container or a plastic water/air proof pack inside ice or a cooler.
3. Opened Spices
Dried herbs and flavors begin to lose their flavor and strength once opened hence you should not be deceived that they have a longer shelf-life just because they are spices.
Your spices should be preserved in an impenetrable container in a cool and dry place.
Nuts such as macadamia and pecans contain regular oils hence they should not be kept for a long time as these oils can make the nuts go bad resulting in a slight acidic taste.
The higher the nut’s fat content, the faster they go bad. Pistachios, cashews and almonds contain a low fat content thus they do no expire fast and can last for up to four months.
Store your nuts in a sealed plastic pack in a cool place to extend their shelf-life.
Your breadcrumbs should be regularly inspected to ascertain that they are well preserved away from sweet-smelling flavors. Exposure to air will result in breadcrumbs that are stale.
Chocolate stored at room temperature can stay for up to two months past the sell-by date but in the event that your chocolate temperature has vacillated through capacity, then it will have a “fat sprout” that gives the chocolate an offensive grainy taste.

13. Brown Sugar
If not well preserved, dark colored sugar will turn to a stone-hard mass. Dark colored sugar should be stored in a resealable plastic pack or an air/water proof container.
14. Tinned Vegetables
Tinned vegetables can last for up to two years. Only purchase the tinned vegetables that you require at a given time as most vegetables begin to have a bad taste after one year.
15. Whole Grains
Limit the exposure of whole grains to light and air once opened and store them in a cool and dry place in a hermetically sealed container.
